EARS
A Yorkie's ears should stand erect as young puppies. Usually we start trimming the ears at around 4-5 weeks of age. To keep them erect they must be trimmed every few weeks. This is a great time to get a puppy used to the sound of clippers. A small hand clipper or mustache trimmer is excellent to use.
Begin about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the ear, carefully clipping the hair from the inner and outer surface of the ear, with the grain in a triangle. When all the hair has been clipped away, the edges of the ears may be trimmed, being extremely careful not to cut into the ear leather. Clippers work best for this as they are less likely to cut the ear itself. This is best done in very bright light.
Yorkie, Poodle and Maltese ears also need to be kept clean and the hair in the ear canal must be kept plucked out. If you detect an odor or a waxy build up, there is a good chance there is an infection or possibly ear mites all of which warrants a trip to the Vet!
